capturing

there has been a small problem with capturing which has since been rectified as of 26/02

Filming

We encountered a number of problems over the course of 4 lessons of filming:-

* using a working office as the filming location was difficult as we had to deal with occasional interruptions. However, some filing could be done while the office was occupied as the scene used a lot of close ups.

* we had to perform a risk assessment as we used stage combat. However, Lewis and Sam were both comfortable with their use of stage combat and there were no incidents.

* Rosie was Ill on day 3 of filming and left half way through. However, the remainder of the filming day was used for further planning and capturing footage.

* At one point there was a shortage of tripods. However, we combated this by filming shots that did not require the use of a tripod such as the handheld shot.

* It was originally planed to use "In The Mood" by The Glenn Miller Band. However, this was not possible due to copyright law.

Snatch opening scene, with fab drawing by Lewis

(Please note the picture is inverted)

1. The opening starts with the back of a person's head at close up as the camera pans up to reveal an establishing shot of the two characters in a dark room.  A voice over begins, revealing the name of the character seated to the left of the scene as "Turkish".

2. A close up of Turkish as he looks to his right and the voice over reveals the other character as "Tommy"

3. close up of Tommy playing with  his teeth

4. Turkish looks at Tommy in close up, then towards the unknown character in front of them.

5. Mid shot of Turkish and Tommy while Turkish's voice over continues.

6. Close up of Tommy looking around the room.

7. Close up of turkish looking around the room.

8. Voice over ends, fade to black.

9. Fade in to shot of security monitors in an airport. Showing a number of Rabbis walking through security checkpoints. Camera pans to different monitors as the Rabbis walk past different security cameras. Sound from security monitors is heard.

10. Camera pans from monitors to the door of the security terminal as Rabbis enter

Clerks opening

Today we analysed the opening of 'Clerks' (Kevin Smith) into sections of camerawork, representation, mise-en-scene, sound and editing. We found that the opening consisted of predominantely middle shots with many close-ups that were used to highlight details. There was non-diagetic sound of fast-paced rock music, reflecting the era the piece is set in, being the 90s. There is a strong representation of the middle class in the scene.

Mise-en-scene

Locale-> New Jersey
Lighting-> Black and white
Makes it an independent production

Costume-> informal-> t-shirt under formal shirt, jeans, black Dr.Martens
Acting-> realistic, provoking realism

Video clip

                                   10 opening shots storyboarded by Rosie
                                                  (Picture is inverted)

We aim to show our opening in the same eerie light as this scene from 'Resovoir Dogs'; the juxtaposition of violence and up-tempo music. We intend this to take it a step further using Glenn Miller's 'In the Mood'.

The shot in which the ear is removed will be duplicated in the sense that the camera will draw away from the action to evoke the sense of the camera being a witness; a difference being that the camera will be drawn away at the sight of a gun to the head of the victim.

Mise-en-scene: Bleak warehouse setting -> one single light over hostage-> interrogation?

When main character cuts hostages ear off, camera pans away from action as if it were through the eyes of an onlooker-> doesn't want to look because of extremity

Match on Action; putting on boot
CU; main character talking-> importance; could have been used to make audience feel uncomfortable
CU of victim-> tape around mouth, dripping blood-> evokes state character is in

Juxtaposition of upbeat song as soundtrack to extreme gangster violence

Over the shoulder shot of victim-> clear view of main character

Practical

On eStream, we watched a programme about managing film production and decided the following roles:

Quizzical Productions

We will all be shooting the film under the guidance of each other.
